iPhone Duo Hits Stores at $1999 While Tight Stock Limits Walk-In Sales
Apple’s first folding iPhone starts at $1,999, but limited walk-in stock and late-January delivery estimates leave buyers few options, while Samsung says European Fold 8 sales are up 45%.

Apple put its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, on sale on Friday, October 23, 2026, at Apple Store locations worldwide and online.
Apple is betting the device can do for foldables what the original iPhone did for smartphones.
The company is leaning on Trade In, monthly leasing through Apple Upgrade and Apple Card Monthly Installments to soften the price. Supply, though, looks like the first hurdle for anyone who wants one right now.
What Apple Stores Actually Have in Stock for iPhone Duo Buyers
Pre-orders opened a week earlier, and within minutes Apple’s estimated delivery dates had slid to late January as demand outran the limited supply. Apple described the response as extraordinary but gave no unit numbers.
For launch day, walk-in availability varies by country.
As ET Retail notes, stock is limited in the US, Australia, Canada, Mexico and much of Britain and Europe.
In China, France, Hong Kong, India and Japan, only customers who ordered online can collect a unit. Macau is walk-in only, and fans there were queuing hours before doors opened.
Apple’s own launch note focuses on service rather than stock: specialists for Trade In, leasing and carrier deals, Personal Setup for moving data, and new Today at Apple sessions on the iPhone and iOS 27.
Outside the walk-in countries, an earlier online order is the only route in.
Why the iPhone Duo’s $1,999 Price Comes With Compromises
The $1,999 buys 256GB; the 512GB model is $2,199, the 1TB is $2,599, and the 2TB at $3,199, per Apple.
As our earlier reporting covered, a side-button Touch ID sensor replaces Face ID, and the telephoto lens is missing.
Reuters noted that reviewers also flag that third-party apps still need reworking for the new display size.
Early write-ups indeed praise the premium design and a barely visible hinge, which was a weak spot for earlier foldables.
Yet Reuters says several reviewers advised many Apple customers against buying, because the folded phone is less handy for quick daily tasks.
Commentator John Gruber called his unit an “extraordinarily polished prototype.”
Why Samsung’s Foldable Surge Matters While Duo Supply Stays Tight
Ars Technica reports that Samsung UK’s blog post puts combined European sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra 45% above last year’s Fold 7. Apple is never named.
Samsung does add that searches for the Z8 series rose 260% in September, the month Apple unveiled the Duo, and it said last month that US pre-orders were running 30% ahead of last year.
Samsung also added a wider, non-Ultra Fold ahead of Apple’s launch, which Ars says likely answered the earlier foldable leaks.
The numbers have limits. Samsung gave no unit counts and has not split sales between the two Fold 8 models. Still, the timing points to a halo effect, and tight Duo stock gives shoppers a reason to look at the nearest alternative.
So, until supply catches up, Samsung is the one reporting the gains.
