Apple’s $1,999 iPhone Duo Enters a Foldable Price War With Rivals

Apple unveiled its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, at $1,999 on Wednesday, landing the device right in the middle of a foldable price war that Huawei and Xiaomi had already escalated just two days earlier with their own new launches.

Key Takeaways

  • The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, undercutting analyst predictions of $2,500 or higher, with preorders opening October 16 and sales starting October 23
  • Apple built the Duo’s hinge from titanium and carbon fiber using AI-assisted manufacturing to match each individual hinge to its housing for precise alignment
  • The device skips a telephoto lens and Face ID entirely, relying on dual 48-megapixel cameras and a Touch ID button instead
  • Apple also refreshed the iPhone 18 Pro with a variable-aperture camera, alongside new Apple Watches, AirPods 5, and a redesigned Health app

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, at a “Surprise and Shine” event Wednesday, pricing the device at $1,999 for the base 256GB configuration, with pre-orders opening October 16 and general availability October 23.

The launch, led by newly appointed CEO John Ternus in his first fall keynote, arrives just two days after Huawei and Xiaomi rushed out competing foldables.

This turned Apple’s pricing decision into a direct data point in an already crowded, increasingly public foldable price war rather than a debut in isolation.

Apple Priced Below the Doom-and-Gloom Predictions

Going into Wednesday, analyst expectations for Apple’s foldable skewed high.

Market researcher IDC had projected a starting price of over $2,500, and even Citi analysts’ more conservative estimate put the floor at $1,999, the exact number Apple ultimately landed on.

That positions the Duo just above Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, which was priced at $1,900 and now retails for around $1600 per CNET, and dramatically below Huawei’s newly launched Mate XT2 tri-fold, which starts over $2,900.

It also lands comfortably above Xiaomi’s 18 Fold, which opened at roughly $1,640.

Former CEO Tim Cook had already told investors that price increases across the lineup were “unavoidable” amid a global shortage of memory and computer components.

This is the shortage that’s also driving the $100 price bump on the standard iPhone 18 Pro this year, so landing at the low end of pre-event forecasts for a first-generation foldable reads as a deliberate restraint, not an accident.

The Compromises Behind That Number

Apple’s $1,999 price tag comes with trade-offs that separate the Duo from its Pro-tier siblings

It has no dedicated telephoto lens, instead relying on a 48-megapixel Fusion Main and a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide, with 2x optical-quality zoom achieved through the main sensor.

It also drops Face ID for a Touch ID button, a compromise Apple hasn’t made on a flagship device in years.

Where Apple clearly spent engineering effort is durability. As TechCrunch cites Apple’s Chief Hardware Officer Johny Srouji, the company uses AI algorithms during manufacturing to precisely match each hinge to its best-fit housing.

The hinge is engineered from more than 100 components and covered by a 3D-printed titanium hinge cover, while support ribs reinforce the internal structure. The device still achieves an IP68 water and dust rating.

This directly addresses the crease and durability complaints that have followed foldables since Samsung launched the category.

Apple Didn’t Win on Spec Sheet, It Won on Restraint

The real story in Wednesday’s pricing isn’t that Apple undercut Samsung, Huawei, or Xiaomi on paper, but that it chose caution in a category where major players have been racing toward more dramatic hardware.

Huawei’s tri-fold and Xiaomi’s ultra-thin approach are bets that foldables win by pushing engineering further. Apple’s bet is that a durable hinge and defensible price matter more to mainstream buyers than winning a specs argument on launch day.

That’s a lower-risk strategy for a company entering the category late, but it also reveals Apple’s aim: not to out-innovate Huawei’s folding mechanics or Xiaomi’s chip claims.

Instead, Apple is trying to convince skeptical buyers that this is a foldable durable and refined enough to trust, even without a telephoto lens its Pro lineup has had for years.
