Claude Duet Costs Nothing Extra, But Spends Your Usage Limits

Anthropic’s proactive agent comes bundled with Pro and Max, yet every background check and larger task draws on the same usage allowance your chats already use.

Key Takeaways

  • Claude Duet entered a research preview on October 21 through a US-only waitlist for Pro and Max subscribers.
  • It sends a morning brief, watches connected apps, and keeps working on its own virtual machine after you put the phone down.
  • It asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes, and will not trade securities or shift money between accounts at all.
  • Anthropic limits how often Duet checks your accounts, since constant monitoring would burn through plan limits much faster.

Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, a standalone app where Claude acts as a proactive agent for professionals and small business owners who have more to track than they can handle.

Access rolls out initially through a waitlist for US Pro and Max subscribers across iOS, Android, and web with no separate subscription fee.

Duet is built around Claude Opus 5.5, and it carries over memory, skills and connected apps from a Claude account so setup stays light.

How Claude Duet Works Once Anthropic Lets You In

According to Anthropic, Duet sends a short brief covering the most pressing items across your connected apps each morning, then stays quiet until something needs you.

Between those moments, you can hand it work by typing or voice in one ongoing thread, from scheduling meetings to building dashboards, drafting forecasts, prototyping, and building web apps.

MacRumors notes that, like Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots, it has a virtual machine with its own browser, so a task keeps moving when your laptop and phone are off, and a notification arrives when it finishes or needs review.

Integration reaches past 6,000 connectors via the Claude Marketplace, bridging tools like Gmail, Slack, QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto, Docusign, HubSpot, Canva, and Shopify.

Purchases go through Stripe’s Link wallet, which pays with a virtual card so your real number stays private. Signing in with logins saved in the 1Password password manager is listed as coming soon.

What Claude Duet Refuses Even When You Say Yes

As the AI lab notes, Duet requires explicit user approval before sending messages, making payments, signing documents, or deleting files.

Two actions stay blocked even then: trading securities and moving money between accounts.

Its credential handling follows the design behind Claude Managed Agents, so it never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens.

A dedicated classifier and safety prompt inspect each message and guard it against leaks.

The strictest tier of data, including credit card numbers and government ID, is rejected outright, while health and personal finance details travel only when you explicitly tell Duet to send them.

Anthropic says red teams and an external penetration-testing firm probed the system, and it falls under the company’s public bug bounty program. You can also disconnect any app Duet touches.

Why Claude Duet’s Usage Math Matters More Than Its Rivals’ Prices

Subscription tiers dictate competitor access since Muse offers free entry while Dots require paid OpenAI plans.

Duet avoids that barrier through its Pro and Max bundling. However, background operations draw directly from standard message quotas, and complex workflows require heavy model processing.

That explains why it checks accounts only every few hours. Official figures regarding daily quota consumption remain undisclosed, so subscribers will learn the price by watching their meter.

The company also says that Duet may misread a thread or misjudge urgency. It handles personal errands such as booking tickets less well, cannot show you its browser yet, and lives in a separate app.

Only one lever exists today: you can tell it what to flag and how often. For a tool that works while you are away, that setting is the closest thing to a spending control.
