Apple’s New AirPods 5 and Watch Series Can Now Understand Your Conversations
Apple’s new AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12, and Ultra 4 add Audio Intelligence for conversation transcription, daily summaries, and continuous heart rate tracking, raising privacy questions Apple says it has addressed.
Apple unveiled AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12, and Ultra 4 at its highly anticipated “Surprise and Shine” event Wednesday.
While none got a dramatic external redesign, the new devices focus on smarter wearable experiences, with the watches adding Audio Intelligence features that can help users recall and summarize conversations.
AirPods 5 start at $129, while the $149 version adds a Wireless Charging Case, with both powered by Apple’s H2 chip and featuring Active Noise Cancellation. Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399 and Ultra 4 at $799, with both shipping September 18 with watchOS 27.
The Hardware Upgrades Are Real, Just Not the Headline
Apple says AirPods 5 models remove up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC, alongside improved Voice Isolation, Personalized Spatial Audio, and Live Translation.
The Wireless Charging Case supports USB-C, Qi wireless charging, and Apple Watch chargers.
As Ars Technica notes, the Watch lineup’s real engineering story sits in its rebuilt Health Sensing System, which uses new optical and electrical heart sensors and larger, power-efficient green LEDs.
Together, the new sensors let both watches measure heart rate every five seconds throughout the day, while heart rate variability (HRV) can be measured up to 24 times more often, as frequently as every five minutes.
Apple says its testing found the highest heart rate accuracy among the wearables it compared, though independent testing will determine how that claim holds up against competitors such as Garmin.
Audio Intelligence Is the Feature Everyone’s Actually Talking About
According to Engadget, the more consequential addition is Audio Intelligence, a Watch-exclusive suite for Series 12 and Ultra 4 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later.
The suite includes four features.
- Live Rewind: Lets users double-press the Digital Crown to view a text snippet of the previous 15 seconds of conversation, with an audible chime and microphone indicator showing when it is active.
- Siri Recap: Creates high-level summaries, titles, and key points from conversations.
- Sound Recognition: Identifies sounds such as sirens, alarms, doorbells, and a crying baby.
- Shazam: Adds automatic music recognition that can detect songs playing around you and display the title and artist in the Music Recognition widget on the Smart Stack, without requiring a tap.
Apple says these features do not create or store audio recordings, while Siri Recap summaries are automatically deleted after seven days and all four features are opt-in.
Live Rewind and Siri Recap will arrive in beta later in 2026, initially unavailable in the EU and limited to English, while their server-side processing is subject to daily usage limits.
Apple also redesigned the Health app with a Longevity tab and Health Age feature, which uses Apple Intelligence to show how certain health metrics are tracking relative to a user’s age.

Apple Is Testing How Much Ambient Listening People Will Accept
What ties AirPods 5, the new Watches, and iOS 27 together isn’t a chip or sensor, but Apple’s push toward a more intimate relationship between users and their devices in exchange for convenience.
A text snippet of the previous 15 seconds can be useful when someone misses a name or detail, but it also introduces a new level of ambient AI interaction on mainstream wearables that was not there a year ago.
Apple is rolling out these features gradually, with Live Rewind and Siri Recap initially limited to English, unavailable in the EU, and subject to daily usage limits.
That rollout pattern may be more than simple caution.
It could mean that Apple is effectively gauging how comfortable users are with ambient AI listening, and the response could influence how aggressively it expands these features and how quickly other wearable makers, including Oura and Google, follow its lead.
