iPhone Duo Screen Cracks Raise Questions Over Carrier Replacements

Reports counted about ten owners with inner screens cracking along the hinge, while replacement luck varies by seller.

Key Takeaways

  • 9to5Mac counted about ten unique reports by Sunday of inner screens cracking down the hinge’s center line, leaving a horizontal block of pixels glowing white.
  • iFixit’s teardown found the breaks cluster near where the display’s flex cable crosses the hinge support, with no confirmed cause.
  • iFixit gave the Duo a provisional 5 out of 10 for repairability, ahead of the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold at 4.
  • Apple Store buyers mostly got straight replacements, while carrier buyers reported less luck, including one told to pay for repair.

Within days of the iPhone Duo going on sale on October 23, owners began posting photos of inner screens cracking down the hinge.

The scale is unknown, as 9to5Mac counted about ten distinct cases on Sunday, and Apple has not confirmed a cause. However, iFixit’s teardown, published the same day, offers a detailed look at where the stress may build.

For buyers, the more immediate question is what happens after a crack, and the answer depends on where the phone was bought.

What iPhone Duo Owners Are Reporting Along the Hinge

The screen splits down the center line of the hinge, then a horizontal block of pixels stays stuck glowing white, as user scary_duck23 posts on Reddit.

Timing varies, and a couple of owners said theirs failed during first setup.

An Australian owner told MacRumors his unit cracked after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings, with an audible crack and nothing visibly damaged beforehand.

Scale is the open question. 9to5Mac stresses that Apple has probably shipped hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of units.

One working theory is a batch with a slightly misaligned hinge piece pushing up into the inner screen.

Some owners suggest not closing the phone by pressing the middle of the display, though it is unclear whether that matters, and Apple has issued no handling guidance.

What iFixit’s Teardown Says About Where the Stress Builds

iFixit built a 3D hinge model from teardown footage, patents, and CT scans, then compared it with photos of broken screens.

The damage clusters right where the flex cable opening meets the central hinge support, just below the display cable route, where shifting internal edges change panel support during bending, as the video shows.

iFixit suggests a support bar failing to retract or curved hinge rails lifting unexpectedly as the phone closes could put extra pressure on the display. However, there’s no clear answer.

They noted that sudden force, trapped dust, repeated bending, or a simple factory defect could all cause the failure, adding that wiring issues can mimic a broken panel.

Its dust test found particles in the hinge, causing a crunch, though less than in the Pixel 11 Pro Fold or Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is currently growing in sales.

YouTuber JerryRigEverything’s dust test, cited by MacRumors, saw particles enter the hinge and defeat the magnets that hold the phone shut.

Why Where You Bought Your iPhone Duo Changes the Fix

Apple Store customers fare best. Most affected owners come under the 14-day return window and have been able to return to a store for a straight replacement, 9to5Mac reports.

Carrier buyers report less luck. Carriers lack immediate stock, and one customer was reportedly told he must have dropped the phone and should pay for repair.

Apple is reportedly replacing devices despite thin inventory and sending damaged units to California for examination.

The repair path adds friction. iFixit calls the Duo the most repairable foldable yet, but still “a bear to repair.”

None of this shows a widespread defect. It does mean the thin launch stock is also the pool replacements draw from.
