Apple Releases iOS 26.5 With Encrypted RCS, New Pride Wallpaper, and Maps Updates
Apple released iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 on May 11, 2026, in what is expected to be one of the last feature updates before the company's full attention shifts to iOS 27 at WWDC on June 8.
Apple released iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 for compatible iPhones and iPads on May 11, 2026, following the updated release of iOS 26.5 Beta 1 in early April. The update’s main additions include beta support for end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging, a new Pride Luminance wallpaper, and expanded Apple Maps features.
It also brings EU-specific changes, new App Store subscription billing options for developers in most markets, plus bug fixes and security patches. The iOS 26.5 is likely among the last feature-focused updates before Apple shifts attention to iOS 27, set to debut at WWDC 2026 on June 8.
Any iPhone running iOS 26 can download the update from Settings > General > Software Update.
End-to-End Encrypted RCS: What Actually Changed in Messages
The most significant change in iOS 26.5 is end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging between iPhone and Android devices. Apple’s official release notes describe the feature as a beta rollout, meaning carrier support will expand gradually over time.
The RCS first arrived on iPhone with iOS 18, but cross-platform messages between iPhone and Android users were not end-to-end encrypted like iMessage chats.
In iOS 26.5, the Messages app now visually indicates when E2EE RCS is active, bridging a major gap with Google Messages on Android and its existing security standards.
The update addresses a longstanding privacy gap between iMessage and cross-platform texting, making Android-to-iPhone communication significantly more secure.
Pride Luminance Wallpaper and the New App Store Billing Option
Apple’s annual Pride wallpaper returns in iOS 26.5, but this time with a more customizable approach.
As Mashable noted, Pride Luminance includes 11 pre-built colour variants designed for the Liquid Glass display system introduced in iOS 26.
Users can also create custom versions using between 1 and 12 colours. The Pride Luminance update offers 75 curated shades for building custom 12-color wallpapers.
iOS 26.5 also introduces a new App Store subscription billing option for developers: monthly payments tied to a 12-month commitment.
As Apple’s release notes confirmed, the system allows users to access annual pricing through monthly instalments instead of paying upfront, similar to many streaming services.
The feature will not launch in the United States or Singapore, though Apple has not explained the exclusion.
The change reflects Apple’s broader push to deepen its subscription and services ecosystem, a strategy that mirrors how top AI tools have shifted toward flexible monthly commitment models to reduce the upfront barrier for enterprise adoption.
Maps Gets Smarter and Prepares for Ads
Apple Maps gains two notable changes in iOS 26.5. The first is immediately useful: Suggested Places, which surfaces two contextual recommendations directly in the search bar.
As MacRumors confirmed, the suggestions are based on nearby trends and the user’s recent searches, adding a lightweight discovery layer to Maps without extra setup.
The second change is less consumer-friendly but worth understanding. lays the groundwork for ads in Maps search results across the United States and Canada.
As Apple’s developer release notes state, “Maps may show local ads based on your approximate location, current search terms, or view of the map while you search.”
The ads are expected later this summer, but the supporting infrastructure is already included in iOS 26.5.
For EU users, iOS 26.5 continues Apple’s regulatory compliance work by expanding Live Activity forwarding for third-party accessories.
The update also extends testing for proximity pairing and notification forwarding on third-party wearables, part of Apple’s broader AI and platform strategy ahead of WWDC 2026, where larger changes are expected.
