Apple Trains Its Own China-Specific AI Model With Alibaba’s Help, a First for a Foreign Tech Giant

Apple has trained its own large language model for China with Alibaba's support, a first for any foreign company under Beijing's AI rules.

Key Takeaways

  • Apple trained a China-specific AI model with Alibaba support, gaining control over local AI.
  • Alibaba is helping Apple navigate China’s AI ecosystem while its model handles some Apple Intelligence functions.
  • China’s regulatory approval took eighteen months, highlighting hurdles foreign companies face when deploying AI services.
  • Apple’s approach could become a model for Western companies seeking compliant AI strategies in China.

Apple has trained a large language model for the China market with support from Alibaba Group, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters Friday.

The move marks a shift from Apple’s previous approach of relying entirely on third-party Chinese models, as American systems like Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT remain unavailable under local regulations.

The model would give Apple direct control over AI features on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Vision Pro devices in a market where rivals like Huawei have moved faster on AI-equipped hardware.

A Strategy Shift Neither Company Will Confirm

Reuters reported that Apple and Alibaba did not respond to requests for comment, while the role of Apple’s self-trained model and how it will work alongside Alibaba’s Qwen and Baidu technology remain unclear.

That ambiguity matters because it suggests this isn’t a simple swap of one AI provider for another, but a layered approach where Apple’s own model handles some functions while Qwen and Baidu’s technology handle others.

Notably, this architecture is more complex than anything Apple runs in markets like the US or EU, where a single partner model powers Apple Intelligence end to end.

Built on a Partnership Announced Long Before It Delivered Anything

9to5Mac traced the partnership to February 2025, when Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai confirmed it at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, saying Apple had considered several Chinese companies before choosing Alibaba.

The partnership then took eighteen months to reach a product approval, with China’s Cyberspace Administration formally registering Apple’s generative AI service last month.

That timeline highlights just how differently Apple has had to operate in China compared to its home market, where Apple Intelligence launched on its own timeline without needing a foreign government’s sign-off on the underlying AI service itself.

Why Owning the Model Actually Matters Here

What makes this development worth more attention than a routine partnership update is the logic behind Apple choosing to build rather than simply license.

A fully outsourced AI stack in China would have left Apple dependent on Alibaba’s and Baidu’s roadmaps, pricing, and feature priorities.

Training its own intelligence model with Alibaba’s technical support gives Apple more control over its AI experience while meeting China’s requirement to work with an approved domestic partner.

According to Reuters, it also makes Apple the first foreign company to secure this type of proprietary AI arrangement under Beijing’s current rules, potentially creating a path other Western tech companies could follow.
