OpenAI’s First Hardware Device Reportedly a Screenless, Movable Speaker

Bloomberg reports OpenAI's debut hardware product is a portable AI companion speaker built with former Apple designers, arriving as Apple sues the company over trade secrets.

Key Takeaways

  • Bloomberg reports OpenAI’s first hardware product will be a screen-free, portable smart speaker designed as an AI companion for the home.
  • The device reportedly includes a camera, sensors, and mechanical elements that let it move, setting it apart from conventional smart speakers.
  • Former Apple designers, including those from Jony Ive’s studio LoveFrom, are helping build the product following OpenAI’s $6.5 billion acquisition of Ive’s startup io last year.
  • The report surfaces days after Apple sued OpenAI and two former employees over alleged trade-secret theft tied to its hardware push, which OpenAI denies.

OpenAI’s long-teased hardware ambitions are reportedly taking the shape of a speaker that moves.

Bloomberg reported Tuesday that the company’s first consumer device will be a screen-free, portable speaker meant to feel like a genuine presence inside the home, according to the report.

The product remains under development and would tap ChatGPT’s capabilities to control smart home appliances, play media, answer questions, and respond to messages.

A Speaker Designed to Move and Learn

The device departs from a typical smart speaker in several ways. Reuters reported it will include a camera and sensors that help it understand a user’s surroundings and context, paired with more advanced AI models than those found on conventional speakers.

TechCrunch, citing Bloomberg’s sourcing, described the product as having a distinct personality capable of proactively learning about its owner over time to deliver more personalized responses, with access to a user’s digital life, including emails.

The report also mentions mechanical elements that let the device move on its own, reinforcing OpenAI’s vision of it as a physical extension of ChatGPT rather than a stationary smart speaker.

These details suggest it is designed to be an everyday AI companion instead of just another smart home gadget

Built With Apple’s Former Design Team

The hardware effort has deep Apple roots. Former Apple executive Jony Ive’s design studio, LoveFrom, is helping build OpenAI’s device business, alongside former Apple designers and engineers who worked on the iPhone and Mac.

That talent came largely through OpenAI’s acquisition of io, Ive’s AI devices startup, for $6.5 billion last year.

OpenAI has discussed hardware ambitions for some time. Early reports in February 2026 first teased a speaker equipped with a camera, including earlier speculation about a phone that would compete directly with Apple.

Today’s revelation of a fully movable, screenless companion design represents a refined, concrete evolution of that initial concept.

Reuters noted the speaker could open a new revenue stream for OpenAI as the company moves toward a public listing, giving it a consumer product line beyond ChatGPT subscriptions and enterprise API sales.

The Timing Collides With Apple’s Trade Secret Lawsuit

The report comes days after Apple sued OpenAI and two former Apple employees, accusing the company of using confidential Apple information obtained through former staff, recruiting practices, and supplier relationships to accelerate its hardware ambitions, Reuters reported.

Apple’s complaint, filed Friday, characterized the allegations as merely the “tip of the iceberg,” according to TechCrunch, with the company saying further misconduct would surface during legal discovery.

OpenAI has denied the allegations. While Bloomberg reported that the company believes its new device is substantially different from Apple’s products and does not rely on stolen trade secrets, setting the stage for a legal dispute as the hardware approaches launch.
