OpenAI Just Paused Its $200 ChatGPT Pro Plan, Because Everyone Wants In on Astra
OpenAI says demand for its new Astra model has outpaced infrastructure, echoing the capacity crisis that forced it to pause ChatGPT Plus sign-ups in 2023.

OpenAI paused new sign-ups for its $200-a-month ChatGPT Pro plan on Thursday, citing infrastructure strain from what it calls surging demand for its Astra, its newest and most capable model.
Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI’s product lead for Codex and ChatGPT, said on X that Pro puts the most strain on its systems, making the suspension the “smallest step” while keeping broader access open.
Existing Pro subscribers aren’t losing access, and every other paid tier, including Plus, Go, Business, Enterprise, and direct API access, remains open to new customers.
Why Pro Specifically, and Not Every Plan
The decision to single out the Pro tier wasn’t arbitrary.
According to OpenAI’s usage tables, the $200 Pro plan offers substantially more Astra capacity than Plus and four times the GPT-6 Pro allowance of the $100 tier, making Pro subscribers the heaviest individual users of Astra’s compute resources.
As TechCrunch notes, Sottiaux had flagged the possibility earlier, saying “demand for Astra is really unprecedented” and that this surge stood out despite OpenAI having handled steep growth before.
OpenAI hasn’t disclosed daily sign-up attempts or when Pro sign-ups might reopen, leaving the shortfall’s scale unclear.
Notably, OpenAI raised Codex usage limits last month, suggesting this capacity crunch is a recent development rather than a long-standing issue.
OpenAI Is Paying Customers Back in Usage, Not Cash
What stands out about the pause is how OpenAI is handling customers affected by the restriction.
During the Astra rollout, Sottiaux said paid ChatGPT users would receive “one banked reset for every day you don’t have access to Astra,” allowing eligible users to retain that unused capacity for later.
Hours later, CEO Sam Altman also apologized for the “messy rollout” and said OpenAI would soon expand Astra access to ChatGPT subscribers and API customers, with Pro users included first, mirroring Anthropic’s approach for Mythos, where it rolled out the AI to only vetted organizations.
That sequencing is notable: OpenAI has prioritized Pro users for early Astra access and is again putting them first in the broader rollout, a pattern that rewards the $200 tier’s loyalty even as it’s the one tier currently locked to new buyers.
OpenAI Has Been Here Before, and Handled It Differently This Time
In 2023, demand for GPTs, custom chatbots users could build without coding, forced OpenAI to pause new ChatGPT Plus sign-ups and place prospective subscribers on a waitlist.
This time, the company has limited the restriction to one tier, while adding compensation and a same-day public apology from Sam Altman, suggesting it has learned from that earlier capacity crunch about protecting customer goodwill.
The deeper irony is that OpenAI promoted Astra last week as the beginning of the “AGI era,” a message designed to generate demand and attention.
Now, after that demand exceeded capacity, the company is limiting access to the AI model it presented as a historic leap.
