Forbes security writer Kate O’Flaherty reported more than 60 security fixes, including six kernel-level vulnerabilities, one of which potentially allows root access. Combined with the upcoming software cycle, iOS 26.5.1 is widely anticipated.
What iOS 26.5.1 Is Expected to Fix
Point-one releases in Apple’s update cycles are narrow in scope, and they commonly exist to resolve issues that slipped through testing or emerged in real-world deployment.
As Forbes confirmed through O’Flaherty’s reporting, the security debt from iOS 26.5 justifies a rapid follow-up. Six kernel vulnerabilities in a single release are above Apple’s typical rate, and at least one carries the severity level that Apple typically addresses within days rather than weeks.
Beyond security, MacRumors noted user bug reports following iOS 26.5, including advanced Wi-Fi 6E connectivity inconsistencies, battery drain anomalies on iPhone 17 Pro models in Always-On Display mode, and intermittent RCS delivery receipt failures.
While not explicitly confirmed for iOS 26.5.1, these match the categories Apple’s point patches typically target.
With the revamped Siri app, which reportedly would have auto-delete chat features, remaining the next major milestone, iOS 26.5.1 serves as the final maintenance update before platform focus shifts permanently.
When to Install and What to Do Right Now
The practical advice is straightforward. If you have not yet installed iOS 26.5, Forbes recommends doing so immediately, given the kernel-level vulnerabilities in iOS 26.4 and earlier.
If you have already updated and are waiting for iOS 26.5.1, Apple’s standard release timing for point patches suggests it will arrive within one to two weeks of the parent release, placing it in the final days of May or the first week of June, just ahead of WWDC on June 8.
