Claude Can Now Edit Your Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides Directly
Anthropic brought Claude into Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides as a sidebar that edits files in place, but one that arrives roughly 16 months after Gemini already lived inside the same apps.

Anthropic launched Claude for Google Workspace in public beta on Tuesday, giving Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers a Claude sidebar inside Docs, Sheets, and Slides that reads the open file and edits it without switching apps or tabs.
In Docs, Claude AI can fix a sentence or restyle a heading in place, or propose larger rewrites as suggestion cards a user applies or dismisses individually.
In Sheets, it writes formulas, builds pivot tables and native charts, and can pull data into Python for cleaning before writing results back into the spreadsheet.
In Slides, it builds new slides that match a deck’s existing layout and theme, then checks its own work for overlapping elements or text that runs off the slide.
Two Ways to Let Claude Touch Your Files
The default “Ask before edits” mode presents each change as an approval card with a summary, requiring explicit confirmation before modifying files across your Google apps.
Switching to “Accept all edits” allows Claude to complete entire multi-step tasks, such as building a Q3 budget-versus-actuals report with a tab per team and a summary chart.
Anthropic also released separate Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors that work the opposite way: users can paste a file link or ask Claude to create a new document, with existing Google sharing permissions applied.
Enterprise customers get the same Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys, and audit export controls applied to the add-on that already cover the rest of Claude’s enterprise tools.
Users can install Claude from the Google Workspace Marketplace, open a Docs, Sheets, or Slides file, then go to Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. See the official Claude for Google Workspace guide for complete setup details.
Entering A Race Already Running With Early Limits
Google Gemini has been embedded directly in Docs, Sheets, and Slides since June 2024, giving Google more than two years to refine the exact workflow Claude is launching into beta today.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT reached a similar milestone more recently, gaining the ability to view and edit Google Drive files beside its chat interface on August 13.
However, that editing happens inside ChatGPT rather than Google’s own apps, a meaningful distinction from Claude’s in-file sidebar approach.
Claude’s beta noted some critical limits: the sidebar must stay open to finish tasks, works only on the single open file, not users’ Drive files, cannot read Docs comments, and outputs Slides charts as static images.
These constraints, alongside Firefox incompatibility and a six-minute task timeout, show the integration is still an early beta.
The Real Advantage Isn’t Being First, It’s Being Everywhere
Claude for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is already generally available, showing Anthropic built its in-file editing muscle in Microsoft’s ecosystem before bringing it to Google.
Gemini doesn’t work inside Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Copilot doesn’t work inside Google Workspace, each locked to defending its own platform’s territory.
Claude’s bet is that most organizations span multiple ecosystems, making an assistant that follows files anywhere a genuinely different value proposition than simply matching Gemini feature for feature.
