Apple Plans Standalone Siri App and Major AI Chatbot Upgrade in iOS 27
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported on March 24, 2026, that Apple is testing a dedicated Siri chatbot app, codenamed Campos, set to debut at WWDC on June 8, though Apple has not officially confirmed any details.
Apple is reportedly overhauling Siri from the ground up, transforming it from a voice command utility into a full AI chatbot with a dedicated standalone app, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who broke the story on March 24, 2026.
The redesigned Siri, internally codenamed Campos, is expected to debut at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8, 2026, alongside iOS 27 and macOS 27.
As per the report, the new Siri will support continuous text and voice conversations, directly competing with leading independent AI platforms. Apple has not publicly confirmed any aspect of the redesign, and a spokesperson declined to comment.
How Apple’s Campos Siri App Works
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that the standalone Siri app will display either a list or a grid of past conversations, with options to favorite chats, search through chats, initiate new chats, and save chats, with conversations displayed in iMessage-style chat bubbles.
MacRumors reports that activating the new Siri triggers a redesigned animation prompting users to search or ask questions.
The reports note that Apple is testing Dynamic Island integration, where a glowing icon and “searching” label appear during processing. The interface then expands into a larger frosted-glass (translucent) panel to show results, moving away from previous full-screen overlays that blocked your entire view.
Beyond the standalone app, 9to5 Mac reports, Apple is integrating Siri across the system with a new ‘Ask Siri’ toggle, while a ‘Write with Siri’ feature brings writing tools directly to the iOS keyboard for easy access.
This allows users to send text from any app directly to the assistant for help without ever switching the screen currently in use.
Why Siri’s iOS 27 Redesign Is Overdue
As previously highlighted by Android Authority, Apple has struggled to gain traction with its Apple Intelligence initiative, which failed to capture the same excitement as rival platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The Verge has previously reported that Siri’s onscreen awareness and personal context features, first promised at WWDC 2024 as part of iOS 18, were never delivered as described because the functionality did not work reliably enough to ship.
Apple had been targeting iOS 26.4 as the release window for Gemini-powered Siri features, but testing problems forced the company to push those capabilities to iOS 26.5, expected in May, and potentially iOS 27 in September.
The pattern of delayed AI features has placed Apple under significant competitive pressure heading into WWDC 2026, the conference Apple itself has already confirmed will spotlight “AI advancements.”
Google Gemini Powers Apple’s New Siri
AppleInsider reported that in January 2026, Apple confirmed a multi-year partnership with Google to bring Gemini-powered intelligence to an updated Siri.
While Apple evaluated alternatives like ChatGPT and Claude, executives stated Google’s technology offered the strongest foundation for their requirements. The deal is estimated to run approximately $1 billion annually.
The Gemini model runs on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers to keep user data partitioned from Google’s infrastructure. This design allows Apple to maintain its privacy positioning while leveraging Google’s frontier AI capabilities.
The new Siri will be able to search the web, generate images, and assist with coding. It will also summarize information and analyze uploaded files, capabilities that bring it functionally in line with what other leading AI platforms offer, per Mashable.
Who Does Apple’s Siri Overhaul Affect
For iPhone and Mac users globally, the iOS 27 Siri overhaul will introduce Apple Intelligence features originally promised for iOS 18. The Siri now leverages personal context to answer queries, execute actions across apps, and analyze on-screen content.
While these capabilities offer a massive upgrade, Android users have already accessed similar features via Google Gemini for over a year.
In Japan, the impact is more direct. MacRumors reported in November 2025 that iOS 26.2 allows users to replace Siri on the side button with alternatives like Gemini or Alexa, following regulations introduced in December 2025.
This means users are no longer locked into Siri and can choose their preferred assistant, reflecting how local laws are reshaping Apple’s AI rollout, including Campos.
What’s Next For Apple’s Siri at WWDC
Apple is expected to preview the redesigned Siri at the WWDC keynote on June 8, 2026, with a full rollout planned alongside iOS 27 and macOS 27 in September. It remains unclear whether what Apple previews at WWDC will match what actually ships, as the company has recently announced features that arrived months later than expected.
MacRumors reported that Apple plans to deliver its remaining delayed Apple Intelligence features before the end of 2026. This makes the iOS 27 cycle one of Apple’s most important software releases since the original Siri launch in 2011.
