ChatGPT Down Again: OpenAI Confirms New Outage Across ChatGPT, Codex and APIs

OpenAI is dealing with another service disruption on July 25, 2026, with its official status dashboard showing an active, unresolved incident affecting ChatGPT, Codex, and its API platform simultaneously. The status page lists the problem simply as “elevated error rates” and states the company is “investigating the issue for the listed services,” with the incident still open as of this writing.

A Second Outage in Three Days

This is not an isolated event. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Codex, and API access were also disrupted on July 23-24, 2026, an incident the company attributed to a downstream infrastructure provider before marking it fully recovered roughly a day later. 

The new incident beginning July 25 suggests OpenAI’s infrastructure has faced repeated strain this week, though the company has not publicly linked the two events.

User Reports and What’s Unconfirmed

Separately from OpenAI’s official status update, some users on social media have reported being locked out of ChatGPT entirely, with several posts describing the issue as tied to an authentication service rather than general slowness. 

Reported symptoms include failed logins, inability to load existing conversations, and “service unavailable” messages affecting both free and paid accounts. 

Outage-tracking communities including DownDetector also logged a spike in user reports in the early morning hours U.S. Eastern Time. 

It’s worth noting that OpenAI’s own status page has not specifically confirmed authentication as the cause; that detail currently comes from user reports rather than an official company statement. 

As of publication, OpenAI has not provided a timeline for a fix, and the incident remains listed as “Investigating” on its status dashboard.
