How Agentic AI is Changing the Healthcare Industry

Agentic AI is a cut above generic AI, exceeding the common chatbot with its automation capabilities, ability to work without human input and ability to improve performance based on outcomes. These types of AI were previously only included in less than 1% of enterprise software. However, by 2028, usage is expected to surge to 33%.

In the healthcare industry specifically, AI agents in healthcare are now becoming an important part of from and back office operations, optimizing administrative workflows and alleviating burden for providers. Some processes that these agents can streamline are insurance capture and verification, out of pocket cost estimation, the indexing of inbound documents and lab requisition forms.

Public-facing generic AI models are often limited in the data they are trained on and HIPAA regulations. In their place, agentic AI is able to help address administrative burden, giving back precious time to doctors and their patients.

Time and cost benefits are abundant under this new system. Studies have already found a 20% increase in revenue and 40%-70% in cost savings following the deployment of these agents. In terms of time, over 50 hours have been saved weekly through provider use of AI, and referral processing time has decreased to less than 30 seconds.

This data equates to a better quality of life and care for patients as well. When doctors have more time to care for those who need it, patients experience faster diagnoses, customized treatment, more face-to-face time and an increase in overall satisfaction.

Over 70% of healthcare workers believe that AI will be essential to the industry in the next 5 years, so long as it is able to remain efficient, reliable, accurate and easy to use. Following the trajectory of AI development, it won’t be long before professionals are able to bridge the gap between interest and full adoption.
